BALA

MARY JONES WALK

Bala Backpackers

Moderate

Wed 1 July

Mary Jones Pilgrims to Bala.  Walk the walk that inspired history into forming the Bible Society we know today.  205 years ago in 1804, a young lady walked 26 miles barefoot to Bala for a Bible.  So moved was the man she acquired it from, Thomas Charles that he started printing Bibles into many languages, which is still happening today.  Hear Mary's story, and stay at Bala-Backpackers private Hostel for this 3 night event starting on a Thursday evening.  Self-catering breakfast and packed lunch, with one meal in and one meal out for the whole group (Fri & Sat).  Transport to the start of linear walk involves a bus-fare and steam train ride home.  Steady climbs up luscious green valleys flanked by the mighty Cader Idris and Aran mountains, gives 2½ full days walking, ending with a dip in Bala Lake.  We will get back to Bala by 3pm on Sunday.  Places will be limited to size of  the minibus, which needs to be confirmed two weeks before the event.  Single Beds and NO Bunks for your comfort, or Private Twin Rooms upgrade options.

Sat 18 - Sat 25

KESWICK

Lake District Convention

Moderate

Sat 20 June

After a year’s absence CRC will again be visiting Keswick during the Convention (Keswick Ministries), a large Christian gathering for teaching, worship and prayer.  There is no formal charge or registration, although a contribution of about £60 per head is suggested to help cover meeting costs.  As usual our plan is to walk in the afternoons, and normally (but not always) to be back in time for the evening meeting.  In previous years, walks have included Helvellyn via Striding Edge, and Great Gable, as well as some more relaxed walks.  Places are reserved in two self-catering cottages in Keswick (£180 for a single room; £135 for a bed in a twin room).  It is expected that everyone will take a turn with group catering and cleaning.  Members are welcome to book their own accommodation (YHA, B&B, camping etc.), but please let me know.

SWANAGE

Dorset

Easy Moderate/ Moderate

Sun 28 June

Spend the summer bank holiday in Swanage, the gem of the Jurassic coast.  On foot - and perhaps using public transport, we will explore the coasts, hills and byways of Purbeck.  Our walks will take us along the coast to Worth, the ridgeway to Corfe, and across Studland Heath to Greenland and Scotland (and still be home for tea!).  For those not wanting to walk, there are plenty of other activities available locally; sea-bathing, sailing, scuba-diving, riding - and Swanage is famous for its steam railway, pier and one of the last Punch and Judy shows left in Britain!.  Packed lunches and evening meals will be available in the Hostel (and bookable on arrival: prices still to be confirmed at time of writing): however there will be a group meal out on the Sunday evening.  Swanage is a popular hostel - so please book early!

Mon 31 - Fri 4

IDWAL COTTAGE

North Wales

Moderate Hard

Thu 2 July

Do join us for these few days in North Wales. The intention of this event is to give those attending the opportunity to explore the joy of the outdoors by experiencing a few days of guided Scrambling. Scrambling in many ways occupies the middle ground between Climbing and Hill-Walking and should appeal to anyone who wants to add some extra spice to their walking and who has a head for heights and exposure.  The intention of these few days will be to do one day of unguided scrambling at Level One before having 2-3 days of guided scrambling at a harder level with roped protection.  There will be additional costs for the hire of a guide.

LLWYN-Y-CELYN

Brecons

Hard

Thu 9 July

With spectacular escarpments and corries, and their highest point not far off 3000 feet (in old money), the Brecon Beacons deserve more attention from serious hill walkers than they seem to get.  I plan to walk the two main ridges of the Beacons, east and west of the Youth Hostel, on the Friday and Saturday, and offer a shorter walk in the Black Mountains after church on Sunday.  With summer turning to autumn, it should be a good time to walk these hills.  Llwyn-y-Celyn Youth Hostel is an old Welsh farmhouse in the heart of the Brecon Beacons and was refurbished just a few years ago.  It reputedly offers good evening meals (at a price) and a range of local beers and ciders.

Fri 18 - Sun 20

Thu 24 - Sun 27

LEE ABBEY, BEACH CHALET

North Devon

Moderate

Fri 24 July

We will be staying in a self-catering chalet situated directly above the beach, giving us a stunning sea view and a fantastic base from which to explore North Devon and Exmoor as well as the Lee Abbey estate.  The dramatic Valley of Rocks will be on our doorstep, and Watersmeet, Heddons Mouth, Brendon and the famous Doone Valley are just some of the many stunning attractions nearby.  The chalet sleeps 12 people and we can enjoy the coast, the sunsets, and all that Lee Abbey offers in the House.  The chalet consists of a lounge/dining room, kitchen and one bathroom and two shower rooms.  There is one double bedroom, two triple bedrooms and one four-bedded bedroom.  Bed linen is provided; you need only bring towels.  We shall be self-catering in the main and will probably join in the Sunday worship with the Lee Abbey community  With only 12 places available please book early to avoid disappointment.

Fri 3 July

We are planning a Navigation training event for anyone who already knows a bit about map reading or wants to build on from the skills learnt in Navigation Part 1 led by Jane Wood.  This weekend aims to give you the skills to navigate in lowland areas of Britain.  It will be very  much a practical two days developing and practising skills - like taking and walking on a bearing, timing how long a walk will take, estimating distance walked often known as ‘Pacing’ and more.  However,  don’t let these terms put you off - it’s all about practising them with others in the safety of ‘The Long Mynd’ hills just west of Church Stratton.  Numbers on the event will be limited.  For a chat to see if this event is for you, or for more details of costs etc. please give the leader a call by 3rd July.

Sat 24 - Sat 31

BORROWDALE

Lake District Week

Moderate Hard / Hard

Tue 25 August

The recent programme Rain on BBC4 identified this area as the wettest in England - but don't let that deter you as the Lake District is beautiful at this time of year and there are many mountains to climb within a short distance of this lovely hostel in Borrowdale and if it rains we can always go down the Honister slate mine!  Meal prices - Breakfast £4.65, Packed Lunch £4.15/£5.25, Dinner £9.25.
