Thu 1 - Mon 5

HAWORTH
CRC AGM

All

Thu 3 April

Come and explore this beautiful area of West Yorkshire made famous by the Bronte sisters who wrote their books and lived in the nearby parsonage.  The last AGM weekend that was held at Haworth, was at the end of the foot & mouth outbreak so our walking was curtailed.  But this time we hope to enjoy a wide variety of walks taking in lots of what this area can offer.  There is also plenty to do should you not want to walk - so something for everyone.  Book soon.  Meal Prices - Breakfast £4.50; Packed Lunch £5.10; 3 Course Evening Meal £9.  Tea, coffee, sugar, hot chocolate, squash and milk (including enough for self caters breakfasts) will be provided.  A small charge to the overnight cost will cover this.

Mon 5 - Fri 9

KETTLEWELL
AGM follow on

Moderate

Wed 5 March

Why rush home after the AGM?  Stay an extra night at Haworth then move on to Kettlewell, situated in Upper Wharfedale.  Here there is a wide variety of walking, with high routes over Great Whernside and Buckden Pike, cross valley routes, lovely riverside paths and limestone edge walks.

Fri 16 - Sun 18

SAFFRON WALDEN
EAST ANGLIA

Easy

Sun 16 March

Saffron Walden is a delightful market town with coffee shops, book shops, stalls; we might even emerge to walk in the very pleasant countryside around!  Do join us for 2 days in May at this historic youth hostel.

Fri 16 - Sat 24

OBAN & IONA
IONA AND SOUTH MULL - SCOTLAND

Moderate

Sun 17 February

The 4 star Iona hostel (www.ionahostel.co.uk) is on a working croft near the beach at the north of the island.  We have 6 nights here, to soak up the peace and natural beauty.  We will self-cater for breakfasts/packed lunches and group-cater for evening meals.  The first and last nights are at Oban youth hostel where you can self-cater or eat out.  We will take a minimum of cars on the ferry to Mull and leave them at Fionnphort, where the ferry goes to Iona.  On several days we will cross back for walks on the Ross of Mull, including deserted settlements, a nature reserve, beaches and the dramatic Carsaig arches.  There will also be chance to watch wildlife, worship at Iona Abbey and maybe take a boat trip to Staffa or the Treshnish Isles.  Please budget approx. £80 for ferries, travel on Mull and shared meals plus £20-40 for optional boat trip.  There are only 21 beds (including 1 twin room), so book early!  Please telephone the leader first.

Thu 22 - Mon 26

CLUN MILL
SHROPSHIRE HILLS - BANK HOLIDAY

Moderate

Sun 23 March

Join us for the Bank Holiday weekend in this beautifully restored watermill.  The Hostel is self-catering and set in the small village of Clun, an area of wild rolling hills and wonderful scenery.  We will visit the local historic castle and nearby Ludlow.  Walks in this beautiful area will probably include a section of Offa’s Dyke, Clun Forest, the Long Mynd and the Shropshire Way.  We will self-cater for breakfasts and packed lunches and group cater for evening meals other than Saturday, when we will eat in a local pub.  Volunteer(s) would be appreciated for cooking with everyone else helping generally!  (Cost of communal food to be confirmed and paid for at the event).  We will have our own service on Saturday night to maximise the time for walking.  We have booked 10 places in the Hostel.

Thu 22 - Mon 26

SHERINGHAM
NORFOLK - BANK HOLIDAY

Easy

Sun 23 March

Come and spend a long weekend at Sheringham.  We will almost certainly take a trip on the local steam railway and walk back to Sheringham along the sea sure on one of the days.  I expect we will visit the highest point in Norfolk, "Roman Camp", about 400 feet above sea-level (apparently it has nothing to do with the Romans).  Norfolk may be quite flat but should provide some beautiful easy coastal walking for us to enjoy.  I am thinking in terms of going out for a meal together Saturday evening.

Fri 23 - Tue 27

POPPIT SANDS
PEMBROKESHIRE - BANK HOLIDAY

Moderate Hard

Mon 24 March

Why not join us for a long weekend at Poppit Sands?  Set in its own grounds and with lovely views of the beach from which it gets its name, this hostel offers us a lovely location and the opportunity for some wonderful coastal walking.  We will certainly tackle some of the northern end of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, but will also take in some of the coast that runs north of the Teifi Estuary.  Opportunities for non-walking activities abound and include boat trips into Cardigan Bay where Dolphins and Porpoises are frequent visitors.  Depending on the availability of walk leaders we may also plan a day or half day cycling.  For those who may be interested in explore the coast by Kayak this may be possible to arrange.  This hostel is self-catering so we will self cater for breakfast and packed lunches but will endeavour to organise group catering for our evening meals.  Why not plan to do the follow-on St David’s event and enjoy a lovely week of the best that Wales has to offer.

Sat 24 - Sat 31

ULLAPOOL
NW SCOTLAND -BANK HOLIDAY HILLWALKING, THEME: GEOLOGY

Moderate Hard/Hard

Tue 25 March

The small town of Ullapool nestles beside Loch Broom, with the hostel looking out across the loch.  For those whose holiday pleasure is earned in spending each day climbing as many big hills as possible, over 20 Munros are within range plus several Corbetts including the splendid triple of Quinag (try saying “cognac”!) and “little” Stac Polly.  The area is also perhaps the most geologically fascinating part of the UK and so I plan to offer geological excursions on (probably) 4 days, including short walks at a number of interesting locations, possibly a boat trip on Loch Glencoul that will take in (hopefully not literally!) the UK’s highest waterfall, and Quinag (a big walk).  It will be possible to mix and match as you please between hillwalking and geological exploration.  Please indicate on the form if you’re interested in the geology option, at least on a couple of days, and include an SAE for final information (plus a second SAE if you require a receipt).

Tue 27 - Sat 31

ST DAVID’S
PEMBROKESHIRE

Moderate

Fri 28 March

Come and join us at St David’s for a mid-week break.  We will be spoilt for choice in terms of walking and aim to do as much of this section of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path as possible.  Opportunities for non-walking activities include St David’s itself with it’s fine cathedral, whilst the attraction of Ramsey Island is one you may not be able to ignore.  As with the event at Poppit Sands there may well be the opportunity to plan a day’s cycling depending on the availability of walk leaders, or you may want to just come and enjoy the beach at Whitesands Bay.  Either way we hope to make this event a relaxed and friendly time of fellowship and fun.

CHURCH STRETTON

B&B in SHROPSHIRE

Moderate

Not applicable

Experience the contrasts of the Shropshire landscape with a weekend staying in B&B in the lovely town of Church Stretton.  Nestling at the foot of the Long Mynd, this is an ideal spot for a weekend away.  With over 30 miles of footpaths and nearly 20 miles of cycle routes and bridleways this site of Special Scientific Interest will give you breathtaking views and wandering though its deep cut valleys and by streams you may even glimpse dippers and kingfishers.  The towering peaks of Caer Caradoc, formed from volcanic ash and lava may also entice us upwards.  Church Stretton is well known to collectors as a rich source of antiques and has several good tea shops.  Church Stretton and nearby villages have plenty of reasonably priced B&B accommodation- book your own or contact me to share in the delights of panoramic views from luxurious en-suite rooms together with an indoor heated swimming pool and traditional farm house hospitality or contact me for suggestions.  There will be a whole day walk on Saturday on the Long Mynd and a slightly shorter walk on the Sunday, and we will have our own worship to maximize the time available for walking.  We will probably have a group meal out together on the Saturday evening.  The £2 sec will be collected during the weekend.

Sat 21 - Sat 28

EDINBURGH

SCOTLAND

Moderate

Tue 22 April

The vibrant and historical town of Edinburgh offers you a cultural experience.  The youth hostel where we will be staying is situated in the heart of the city, providing a good base for exploration in and around the surrounding area.  The walks will include Ben Lomond, Pentland Hills, and other hills in the borders.  The evenings, for those who are interested, will enable us to visit the theatre, cinema and take some historical walks around Edinburgh.

Mon 28 April

‘Consider the lilies of the field’.  The aim of this weekend is to open our eyes to just how much diversity God has placed around us.  We will spend Saturday in a Culm grassland area west of Okehampton and Sunday in woods and moorland on the edge of Dartmoor.  We will take flower keys with us in case we come across anything unusual.  We should be able to see some interesting birds and butterflies as well.  The leaders claim to be enthusiastic amateurs rather than experts so don’t be afraid to come along and share your own knowledge.  Numbers are strictly limited to allow these interactions to take place in small groups, so book early.

BALA BACKPACKERS

MARY JONES WALK

Moderate

Sun 25 May

The event of 2008!  In 1800, Mary Jones, aged 15, set out barefoot on a 26-mile walk to buy one of the Welsh Bibles that had been delivered to the home of Thomas Charles in Bala.  The 17 shillings she took with her had taken six years to save.  Mary's amazing story helped inspire the foundation of the Bible Society and the birth of the worldwide Bible movement.  You can retrace Mary's walk, a 26 mile long linear route through green valleys flanked by towering rugged 900m peaks, including Cadar Idris, along pleasant, easy, but long country lanes, tracks, woods and fields spread over 2 days (6-7 hours walking per day).  On the 3rd day we should have an easier walk by the glinting ocean of Bala Lake, and treat ourselves to a steam-train ride home!  If you would like to use this walk as a fund-raiser for the Bible Society, then visit their website at http://www.biblesociety.org.uk/l3.php?id=521 and download an information pack.  Self-cater, hostel meal or eat out for 3 nights at the single-bedded Bala-Backpackers (No Bunks!).  Pack-lunches ordered from the local delicatessen of home-baked treats at £4.50.  Private twin rooms available at £45 for two persons.

SWITZERLAND

Special

?

Summer in the Alps!  Join us for a weeks walking in the Saastal Valley (south of Visp and near the Italian border), an area surrounded by magnificent snow covered 4000m peaks in this German speaking part of Switzerland.  An extensive network of ‘cable cars’ make the area suitable for day walks taking you from the valley floor up to mountain huts; you can, of course, walk all the way!  Its difficult to give this event a CRC Walking Grade, but expect between 6 & 8 hours walking each day with a fair bit of up and down.  We will be staying in either self-catering chalets or staying in a B&B, although there is also the option of camping.  For a day off  from walking, Zermatt is the next valley along or ‘Bike Hire’ will take you to some of the neighbouring villages.  Please contact the leader for further details.
