CHAIRMAN’S CHATTER

Hi! Happy New Year!

New Year is traditionally a time for reflection. There may be a degree of relief or sadness that the previous year is over and, perhaps, naturally, a fear of the unknown as the new year arrives. The Israelites in captivity must have also felt this way when the prophet Jeremiah wrote to them with the promise

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

As New Testament Christians, we can read of the extent of this hope and future that we have been given through the birth of Jesus - Emanuel - God with us. In the gospel stories we can follow Jesus’ life and see his sacrificial death on the cross. It is by His death that we are given access to God and the peace of knowing that our sins are forgiven. But do we know this peace in our experience? Despite all that happens in our lives, whether ‘good’ or ‘bad’ we can know God’s peace and have the assurance that He will use it to work out His purposes for our good.

We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

I trust that, as 2001 progresses, this will be our experience and as we walk and share fellowship together we can encourage one another to press on in our faith.
