AGM Notice

It is usual in this newsletter to give notice of the AGM, which will be held in April at All Nation’s Christian College. All the committee post will become vacant, and there is a possibility that only three current members will be able to stand for re-election. We are grateful to those who have helped with tasks through the year but in order for the Club to function fully we do need members to go that bit extra and take up a committee post. Please do pray for the club and for this matter. If you feel that you can help in this way, please do contact Julie or any other member of the committee.

Security

It has been brought to my attention that unfortunately some valuables went missing during one of the New Year events. It seems from the way that they were subsequently used that it was intruders. This is a reminder not to take more in the way of valuables than you have to for events. Also if the group is offered the use of keys for the rooms they should be accepted and used. I know that this can be a hassle especially if there are not enough keys for everyone in the room to have one. However, both the recent thefts have occurred from folk walking in from the streets and it is impossible for the hostel managers to police every where at the same time. So it would help them and us if we would use keys if we were given the opportunity to do.

Club Tithe

Every year the Club allocates money to charitable causes. If you have any ideas of organisations or people that you are involved with that could benefit, please do contact Julie as soon as possible. Our next committee meeting is the end of January.

This will be the last time that I do the prayer diary, as I’ve now done it for 2 years, and I feel it is time to hand over to the next willing volunteer. Thank you for the encouragement you’ve given. I hope you’ve all found the diaries and scriptures useful.

Virtual Walking

On these winter evenings it is sometimes nicer to sit in the warm and work out a walk without going out in the cold. This is virtual walking. It is also a good way of learning map-reading skills.

Why not have a go at the following walk and answer the questions? Send your answers to the editor; and there will be a small prize for the person sending the most correct answers. If there is more than one 100% correct entry, the winner’s name will be pulled from a fleecy hat! The answers will be given in the next newsletter.

You will need a 1:25,000 map of the area, a compass, and something to use to measure distances (in metric). The walk starts from a hostel that has an event report in this newsletter.

Start at grid reference SN973225 - which hostel is this?

From the hostel and look down at the stream below you – which way is the water flowing, and how can you tell from the map?

Walk up the hostel lane to the main road, turn left and walk 18mm on map - how far in metres have you walked on the ground?

Take the path on the right - on which side of the path is the stream, and on which side is the field boundary?
  1.  
After 250 metres there is a path junction – from the map how do you know when you have got there?
  1.  
At the junction there are five paths, and you want to take the path on grid bearing 311º- what will help you know that you are on the correct path?

Continue to grid reference 967236 - give two reasons from the map that will tell you when you have arrived?

Turn onto the uphill path - what is the difference between this path and the one you have just been on?

Carry on uphill to the trig point - how many metres have you climbed since you left the road, and how do you know?

Take the path that runs approximately SE from the trig point - how far is it from the trig point to the junction of the paths?

From the path junction proceed in a southerly direction - what are the risks on the left and right when you get to the bottom of the col?

Cross the field boundary, and follow the path uphill to the 629m spot height, and then downhill until the path leaves the field boundary – at that point how many metres have you descended?

Carry on downhill – in what direction are you now travelling?

Descend the hill and cross a stream to the path junction referred to in Q5 - how far have you walked since you were last here?

How do you get to the picnic area for a well-earned hot drink?

Thought for the Walk

Many of the reports in this newsletter seem to feature a lot of rain and fog, and it seems whether we went a walked in the wet or stayed in the dry, we can learn from our experiences something of the nature of God.

“So then, anyone who hears these words of mine and obeys them is like a wise man who built his house on a rock. The rain poured down, and the wind blew hard against that house. But it did not fall, because it was built on rock.

But anyone who hears these words of mine and does not obey them is like a foolish man who built is house on sand. The rain poured down, the rivers overflowed, the wind blew hard against the house, and it fell. And what a terrible fall that was!”

Matthew 7:24-27

We can look to God through the clouds of trouble and feel his power supporting us. We can give those problems into His more capable hands so that we can walk through the storm. We may even end up singing in the rain from the sheer joy of knowing God’s presence with us and the closeness of His love protecting us because is His grace is all the power we need to carry us through the storm.
