CHAIRMAN’S CHATTER

The 7-11 youth group at church has been looking at creation, not the actual Genesis account, but concentrating on the `greatness of God’. The verse that was used to emphasis this fact was Isaiah 40v26

` Lift your eyes and look to the heavens; who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength none of them is missing.’

I know that when I have chance to look at the stars especially away from the streetlights, they seem so bright and so numerous – God is amazing. He put them all in their place.

But the whole of Isaiah 40 is tremendous chapter. It speaks of comfort for what the Israelite nation has gone through (v1, 2) and tells of the future (v3-11). It includes conviction or judgement for those who do not believe (v21-24) and ends with encouragement (v25-31). Great words that the actor, playing Eric Liddle brought to life in the film - Chariots of Fire.

Some would say that the Old Testament has nothing to teach us, as it is all about the Jewish nation. However, this chapter looks forward to the coming of John the Baptist and Jesus so we can learn from it even now.

Also if we look at what Jesus taught regarding the Holy Spirit in the Gospels, we can see that the Spirit will bring comfort (John 14v16-18). He convicts (John 16v8-11); He encourages (John 14v25, 26) and speaks of the future (John 16v12-15). So as we celebrate this Pentecost, let us learn from the past and look forward to the future as we experience the work of the Spirit in our lives.

Take care

Julie
