Committee

As at the time of printing no one has agreed to stand for the committee positions of Chairman, Treasurer and Publicity Officer.  Ann is willing to carry on doing the newsletter as a non committee role, but there is a committee position of newsletter editor and if anyone is willing to take on the role, do stand.

Thank you to those who have considered applying for one or other of the posts, but for the committee and club to function fully we do need help.  Please continue to pray and if you feel that you could help especially if you have been a member for a while then please contact the Chairman.

First Aid

You will have seen at the end of the programme a notice regarding first aid courses.  The committee are recommending that leaders have some skills in this area.  Thank you to those who have indicated on the renewal form that this is the case.  However if you feel that you would like to know more or start to learn some new skills, the YHA and other organisations run courses specific to walking.  They can seem to be expensive - the YHA course at Edale is £160 but any training costs that these days!

If you would like to attend such a course, contact the committee as we maybe able to put you in touch with others.

Concessionary Rates for Accommodation

YHA have just simplified their system for concessionary rates for accommodation.  The new system is described on page 3 of the latest supplement to the YHA handbook, “Prices and Opening Patterns up to 28 February 2005”.

Rather than having different discounts for each hostel the discount is now £3 for all hostels.  The criterion for eligibility is unchanged, i.e. those who receive a means-tested benefit relating to low income (income support or job-seekers allowance; disability living allowance; carers allowance; pensioners who also receive pension credit).  The same discount applies to students and young people if they have a valid ISIC, Euro<26, NUS or Connexions card.  However the system for under-18s has not changed, and hostel-specific reduced prices are still available for this group.

In future CRC programmes we will only list the full adult overnight rate for each hostel.  Unless otherwise stated in the event description, those eligible for the discounted rate should deduct £3 for each overnight booked.  This will also apply to non-YH-based events.  For under-18s, please contact the event organiser for prices.  Note that while CRC do not require evidence for eligibility the hostel may, so please ensure that you have appropriate documentation with you at the hostel should the manager wish to see it.

Prayer focus

'He will keep your feet from slipping....'

We may or may not think we are sure-footed, but experiencing the Lord's protection is something we personally would benefit from on every event.  The Lord is faithful,  a refuge and a strong tower, and is close to those who seek Him, where we know our weakness and our need of Him.  Descending on steep hills, knees can take a real pounding, existing wounds and  old injuries can flare-up, back-sprains from lifting luggage, tumbles, twisted ankles and ligaments from uneven ground, the list goes on.  Apparently more walking accidents than any other happen on the hills on the way home, slipping on wet grass when tired.  Anyone who has been skiing recently will know the risk of others colliding with them at  high speed, and the need for the Lord to be with us every step of the way, while also being as sensible as we can.

Injuries prevent us from enjoying the full experience of being on the event with others, preoccupy our thinking, and make us feel out-of-things, as well as possible having serious long-term implications.

'Dear Lord, please protect us on the forthcoming events, keep us from 'falling headlong'.  We look to you to help us in your mercy and graciousness.  Please keep us safe, and may our feet to be secure.  Help us to concentrate where we need to . We pray for walk leaders, particularly when they are scouting routes as lone-walkers.  We pray against the group's exposure to the cold, loose rocks, and sun-stroke and for protection from taking any wrong directions.

We pray for those travelling to the event. We pray for spiritual protection for those who lead events or lead worship or provide Christian input to the event, that they would not be prevented from delivering your message and encouragement.

We place ourselves, the group and the committee into your hands.  In Jesus Name.

Amen.

Non CRC event - Three Peaks Challenge 27-29 August 2003

Last August, Rev. Rob Frost of Share Jesus International celebrated 20 years in the Ministry, by organising the Three Peaks Challenge. This sponsored event was to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon over three days to raise money for the work of Share Jesus International and to pray for our nation.

About 80 people took part, from all over the UK, including a man from Shetland, one from Belfast, and a group from Cornwall.  I joined the party at Cheadle Hume, near Stockport, on Tuesday, and the coach took us up to Glen Nevis Youth Hostel.  A large wooden cross was carried up each mountain and used as a meeting point for the prayer time.

On Wednesday we climbed Ben Nevis and prayed for Scotland, before spending the night at Penrith.  Thursday breakfast was prepared and served by Penrith Methodist Church.  Then we went to Seatoller for the ascent of Scafell Pike, where we prayed for England.

On Friday we climbed Snowdon by the miners track from Pen-y-Pass and prayed for Wales and Northern Ireland.  We were joined at the top for a time of worship by Rob Frost's eighty year old father who had taken the train.  The whole operation involved three late nights and a diet of sandwiches and fish and chips.  But it was physically and spiritually rewarding.
