Chairman’s Chatter

I have just returned from the clubs week event in the Lake District.  The varied landscape and terrain gave us interesting and challenging walking.  The lakeside paths were stony underfoot and extremely muddy.  The lower fells were boggy, made worse by the swollen rivers and streams.  Some ascents took us over craggy outcrops that required careful scrambling and steady footwork on the narrow ledges.  Our descents were either on loose scree, slippery rocks, or spongy paths and needed to be tackled with caution.  Ridge paths that opened out onto grassy plateaux were a welcome relief for both body and mind.

Whatever the terrain, I seemed to be always looking for the easy way’.  At the same time I was expecting to find myself going in the right direction, maintaining my balance and achieving my goal - a safe return home.

I know that to accomplish a good long walk there is no ‘easy way’.  The same is true for each one of us as we walk the Christian path - it is hard to keep our direction.  Little things so easily and quickly take us off course.  It takes discipline to maintain a spiritual balance in our hectic, do more, go-faster lives.  And, to achieve our goal - the Master’s ‘Well done’ - requires determination and perseverance.

The Christian walk leads us on varied terrain.  It doesn’t do to always look for the ‘easy way, or to try to take short cuts.  Jesus did neither.  What is demanded of us is that we look to Him who is our guide and our example, and who, whatever the terrain, walks with us each step of the way.  Sit quietly and prayerfully and read Hebrews 12 v 1 and 2.
