Chairman’s Chatter

We hear that sales figures for many High Street stores were not good over the Christmas period.  Despite this, the managers of these stores when interviewed try to inject a positive note into a somewhat gloomy reality.  Only the other day I heard one manager say 'The truth about Christmas can't really be understood until Easter'.  Wow!  What an amazing spiritual truth!  I wonder if he knew what he had said?

The two events, Christmas and Easter, are uncompromisingly linked.  The truth about the child in the manger is only revealed in the man of the cross and empty tomb.  Jesus came to teach us about God and our relationship with Him.

Nowhere can we see this more clearly than in the cross.  For there we see, not only the love of God on full view to the world, but also our sin.  Sin separates us from God.  Jesus, in His death, takes that sin from us and makes it possible for our relationship with Him to be restored.  How can He do this?  He can do this because He is the Son of God.  His resurrection is further proof.  By raising Jesus, God placed His seal of approval on Jesus' whole life and teaching.  The events of Easter let us know that the message of Christmas is true and can be understood.  It enables us to know who He was and why He came.  'Christ Jesus came into this world to save sinners.'

One last thought.  It's easy to feel like a Christian at Christmas.  But Easter which means death - dying to oneself, and resurrection - living a new life in Christ it is not quite so easy or comfortable.  We are called to be both Christmas and Easter Christians.

It's Emmanuel and Hallelujah!  Happy Easter!
