Chairman’s Chatter

Signposts!  The English countryside is full of them!  Of course, as walkers, we know that we could not hope to follow a route relying on them.  That would be foolish.  We use a map, it is our guide not the signpost.  However, to encounter a signpost when out walking can be a great encouragement to us.  We use them to confirm we are heading in the right direction, to point us in the right direction, and to re orientate us when we are lost.

It is my experience that many folk in CRC are at the moment experiencing change in their circumstances and looking to God for some signposts to help them discern His way forward.  The change may be due to a job-relocation, a necessary house move to a different area, changing family situation, financial difficulties, retirement, bereavement or health problems.  The list could go on, and even if we are not facing change we still need to walk in God’s way.

Just as for the walker the map is their first point of reference, so the Bible is for the Christian.  It is their unchanging and uncompromising guide for their life.  But, whatever situation we are in, there are times when we look for extra encouragements from God which do the same for us as a signpost can do for the walker.  We want God to confirm the direction we are going in to be the right one, or we need to be sent in a different way or for God to re-orientate us when we feel lost.

If we pray for God to show us His signposts He will do so.  It may be a word from a Christian friend, a ‘picture’ when praying, a sermon, a book, a magazine article, the words of a song or a chance remark.  Our God does not hide Himself from us.  He will show us the way if we are willing to look out for His signposts.  They are there.  All He asks is that we trust and follow.  “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding.  In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”, Proverbs 3 v 6 - a command and a promise from God.
