Chairman’s Chatter

Returning from a day’s walk at the AGM in the Lake District we passed through a farmyard.  Hearing the sounds of a bleating lamb coming from a truck we went to investigate.  Just at that time the farmer appeared.  He lifted the lamb from the truck and showed us the lamb’s damaged hind leg.  It had been attacked by a badger.  Whilst we made a huge fuss of the lamb it stood, somewhat unsteadily on the ground.  Happy to have our attention, the lamb did not notice that the farmer had walked away towards the farm house.

Suddenly, the farmer made a loud “baa-ing” sound.  The lamb swiftly turned, and without so much as a backward glance, hobbled off after the farmer.  The farmer’s words were “You see, that lamb knows who feeds him”.  This incident immediately reminded us of Jesus’ parable of the Good Shepherd in John 10 where we read “…the sheep follow him because they know his voice.”  Two brief thoughts:

The sheep know the Shepherd’s voice

To know the shepherd’s voice comes through experience of hearing it.  The constant, distinctive sound of the shepherd’s voice impresses itself on the sheep offering reassurance and security for the sheep.

The sheep follow the voice they know

Knowing is not enough.  To keep the sheep journeying with the shepherd they must have full confidence in the voice of the shepherd and follow when he calls.

For the well being of our own spiritual security and to keep within his purposes for us, we have to both know and follow the Good Shepherd’s voice.  Make these thoughts your own.

For prayer and reflection John 10 vs 1-18
