Chairman’s Chatter

Recently I have retired.  After 37 years of teaching I now face changes in my life, and as a result I have felt my security being challenged.  This is something we all experience at some stage in our lives.  It may be a result of something that is happening to us personally or in the world.

Psalm 46 speaks of a world full of turmoil, and yet it is a psalm of hope.  Therefore it is a good psalm to turn to when our securities are being challenged.  The psalmist reminds us of the sovereignty of God over nature (vv 2, 3), the nations (v 6) and the future (vv 8, 9).  He is God and he is in control (v 1 & 11).

As a result of God's sovereignty we can trust in:

His presence (vv 7, 11) "the Lord Almighty is with us, an ever-present help, therefore we will not fear."

His power as a refuge and strength, a fortress (vv 1, 11)

His peace (vv 4, 5) "There is a river of quiet content where God dwells and whose presence keeps the river flowing.  That river of peace is available to us now.  However, we must not ignore his prophecy of future peace.  The psalmist sees beyond the here and now to a future (at break of day - v 5) when his kingdom will come in all its fullness.  Nature, nations and all peoples will be at peace.

The psalm ends with a command from God himself: "Be still and know that I am God".  God is saying when insecurities arise, stop!  Listen!  Chill out!  Hang in there!   I am in charge despite all the turmoil you are experiencing within and around you, I am the Lord.  I am sovereign and I will be exalted.  Psalm 46 gives us God's view of things.  Let us hold on to that.
