Committee Clips

1.      Committee Members:  The list of committee members who were nominated and elected at the Annual General Meeting that was held at Gradbach Mill on Saturday 5 May is given inside the front cover.

2.      Existing Committee Members:  Alison Edwards, Kevin Pryor, Jeremy Sharp, Sue Edwards, Val Breeze and Julie Excell retain their positions from last year.  PLEASE NOTE THAT JEREMY SHARP NOW HAS A NEW ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBER, BUT HIS EMAIL ADDRESS REMAINS THE SAME.

3.      New Programme Secretary:  Brian Eyles was a United Reformed Church minister, who retired to Swindon in 2005.  He used to be a long distance backpacker, e.g. coast to coast across Scotland, and now specialises in being a back marker on walks.

4.      New Newsletter Editor: Ken White has been walking with the CRC for about 20 years.  He enjoys mucking about with computers, has done newsletters and books and things, loves doing stuff for the Lord, and so is delighted to be able to contribute to the club.

5.      20’s and 30’s events:  There are two special events planned for people in their 20’s and 30’s in July and September.  Please encourage any Christians you know in this age group, perhaps in your church, to attend one of these events.  Jo Franks has produced a flyer about the event in July which is available from her.  Jo’s contact details are in the Programme.

6.      25th Anniversary Books and Sitmats:  Julie still has a small supply of sitmats at £4.00, so make sure you order yours soon.  There are plenty of books with recipes, walks and reflections from Club Members.  The books are now being offered at a reduced price of £2.00.  Please order yours directly from Julie.  Sitmats and books may also be available at some future events.

AGM Addendum

For those of you unable to come to Gradbach Mill for the AGM weekend, I give some notes below to keep you in touch with the club.

1.      Focus groups:  Lots of ideas were generated at these groups.  The ideas are being collated, and will be discussed at the next committee meeting in July.  The next Newsletter that Ken will be editing will give a precis of these.

2.      Associate membership:  This membership would be for people who would like to come on CRC events and might benefit from the Christian witness, but are unable to sign the declaration of faith. Both the Scottish Christian Hillwalking Club and the Christian Rock and Mountain Club already have an associate membership.  For the proposal put forward at the AGM see Page 6.

The AGM decided by a majority vote that we should take this forward.  The next step will therefore be to draft the changes to the constitution and conduct a postal ballot of all club members, probably in the mailing in September 2007.  A two-thirds majority of votes cast in the postal ballot would be needed for this change to the constitution to be passed.

3.      Ethical banking:  It was proposed at the AGM under AOB that the club should consider changing bank accounts to an ethical bank.  Jeremy has agreed to look into this.  Further information will be given in a future Newsletter once the committee has discussed the issues.

Possible Associate Membership

The following proposal was put forward at the AGM:

Associate membership would be available at the discretion of the committee to people aged 18 and over who are in agreement with the aims of the club and sympathetic to the Christian nature of the club.  They would receive regular mailings and be able to attend unlimited events, but would not be able to:

a)     vote

b)     nominate candidates for the committee

c)      serve on the committee

d)     lead walks or events

Safeguards

To ensure that the Christian ethos of the club is not compromised we could include the following clauses:

·      new applications for associate membership may only be considered if their acceptance will not cause the total number of associate members to exceed one tenth of the total number of members.

·      the committee may decline any application for associate membership without having to give reason.

Potential Benefits

·        It may increase the Christian witness of the club to those who are not yet Christians.

·        Members would not be forced to leave the club if their faith wavers (in recent years a few members have reluctantly not renewed because they no longer feel able to sign the declaration of faith).

Please consider this proposal prayerfully when you receive the postal ballot and discuss all the issues with other members of the club.  The committee hope that as many members as possible will vote on this issue, so that the decision taken will reflect members’ wishes.

Home ?

We often cease to feel we operate in new circumstances and long for the old, where we thought we fared better, though sometimes our hearts are still longing for a place we have left behind.  Often we think we saw the plan before we moved, but now we aren’t so sure….

Lord, thank you for creating new situations for us.

But Lord we doubt our ability to be still...and find we are irritable when we wanted to be different here.  Lord, please work your way in these new circumstances where we suddenly take notice of ‘wind and waves’ again.  Help us to continue to hear You.  Thank you that it has still got to be You in the new place, doing, undertaking, bringing things about, in the way we were learning to trust You in the old place.

Sorry Lord for our adverse reaction.  Please help us seek You and stay listening for You in the new situation.

We long for your reassurance that you are there - which You are - we long for You to work it out for us - which You will - we long for a sense of You at work in others - which You are - and we long to be involved in Your purposes.  Please help us not rest until we have beheld Your glory in the new situation, until we have held Your hand in the darkness and prayed until we see a breakthrough in our disbelief.  Help us to know what relationship to have with people in the new place.  Please help us be aware of the potential for new contacts with others.

Please call forth songs of joy and help us stay in good character while adjusting and waiting on you.  ‘Except that a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies.…’.  Lord, please enlarge us in the new circumstances, beyond the initial difficulties and frustrations.  So we eventually bear the imprint of what You want for us in the new place, and reflect your glory.

In Jesus Name.  Amen.   Judy Jones

South West Local Group

Lee Abbey Chalet weekend        9 – 11 March

From tiny lambs to mighty crashing waves, the South West group recently experienced the delights of spring at north Devon’s stunning Lee Abbey.  Celebrating their fourth birthday together, home for a dozen South Westerners was a cosy self-catering chalet on the estate, complete with private beach and chapel.  Gorgeous views out to sea were a welcome distraction from the intense Scrabble skirmishes...

Although the forecast was not promising, the sun certainly shone on the righteous.  Saturday began with a leisurely stroll to Lynmouth via the Valley of Rocks, where we were entertained by the headline grabbing wild goats and their young.  Kids, eh?  Seems some of the locals are demanding a cull, which would be sad.  Then on up the valley to Watersmeet, before heading across to quaint Countisbury church and Foreland Point.  Sunbathing on the cliffs in March was an unexpected diversion.

Sunday morning saw the group joining the Lee Abbey Community for a lively service in the centre’s unique octagonal chapel.  Punctures and empty fuel tanks did not deter the team from reaching Heddons Mouth and its impressive cliffs to round off a great weekend.  Many thanks to Pauline and Paul for all their hard work.
