Chairman’s Chatter

Icelandic folk lore tells of twelve winter goblins who come to our hearts and homes and are the cause of what we often call the ‘winter blues’.  Of course, it is not goblins that cause these feelings, but for me, like so many others, it is the long dark days of winter with so little daylight and sunshine.

Yet even within this winter darkness which can lower our spirits, we find hope.  Although we cannot always see it, our creator God is still active.  Some trees and plants may be bare of leaf, fruit and flower, but they are not dead.  Bulbs hidden underground are not rotting away.  Hibernating animals, warm and protected are still breathing.  The natural world may appear to be lifeless and having the ‘winter blues’. But far from it!  It is taking a rest and undergoing a period of rehabilitation.  All the rapid growth and activity of last summer left it tired and lacking in energy, but now by God’s grace, it is quietly and purposefully being restored and re-energised, ready for rebirth.

So it is for us.  When we experience the ‘blues’, winter or not, and feel tired and worn out by life’s pressures, God is still active deep within us.  He will lead us through a period of rehabilitation.  By God’s grace, we can be spiritually, mentally, and physically restored and re-energised, ready for rebirth.

Our God is a creator God, and just as He is recreating nature ready for the spring that will surely come, so too He will recreate us.  He will bring us into a springtime, when once again we will lift our faces to His sunshine for our strength and live in His light.

For prayer and reflection: Isaiah 43:19 and 41:17-20
