Committee Clips

1.      All Committee Posts - All the committee posts will come up for re-election at the AGM.  So please consider if you would be able to serve the club now or in the future.  Please let any of the present committee (see page 2) know if you would be interested in any of the roles either now or in the future.  Ask for an opportunity to shadow an existing committee member.

2.      Vacant Committee Post - The Programme Secretary post will be vacant at the AGM.  Please consider prayerfully if you would be able to undertake this, and let a committee member know.  It involves typing up 4 programmes a year as well as being an active member of the committee, with 3 meetings a year plus the AGM.

3.      20’s and 30’s events - We hope to get potential new members along to the 20’s and 30’s event in the programme.  Jo Franks has produced a flyer about the event.  Please could members pass flyers on to individual walkers and others in this age group in their church.  These flyers are available from Jo.  Please contact her direct on 01442 268232 or jofranks@bigfoot.com.

4.      25th Anniversary Books and Sitmats - Julie still has a supply of sitmats at just £4.00, so make sure you order yours soon.  There are plenty of books with recipes, walks and reflections from Club Members - again just £4.00 from Julie.  See page 2 for contact details.  Sitmats and books will be available at the AGM and at most other events if you want to avoid postage!!

5.      Disposal of programmes and newsletters - Concerns have been raised by club members that addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses for event leaders, committee members, and local group leaders, are included in the programmes and / or the Newsletter.  Would members therefore ensure that in future all papers with these details are shredded before they are thrown away?

6.      Travelling Costs - On many events, lifts are offered to other members, particularly those without cars.  If you accept a lift, please do not assume that this is free, but offer to pay your share of the petrol.  It is generally accepted that 10p a mile covers the cost of the petrol or diesel for most cars.  This cost should be divided between the driver and all passengers.

7.      Engagement - As a general rule the club does not announce engagements, but we are making an exception in this instance.  Peter Whale and Louise Fazakarley broke off their engagement in the summer of 2006.

Editor’s Excerpts

Thank you to:

·        All who sent me photos or sketches about events.  I have been able to include some of them in this Newsletter.  If you send me photos by email, please only attach one or two maximum to the email.

·        All who sent me reports by snail mail.  I have already thanked those who sent reports by email.  I do not respond to snail mail unless a stamped addressed envelope is enclosed.  Many thanks and please keep the reports coming as I don’t chase them.

New News

Number of Events: How many events have you completed?  Do let me know.  Roger Winterburn claims 125 events in February.

Wedding Congratulations:  Debz Strong married Graham Spinney on Sunday 17 December 2006.  The ceremony was full of praise to a wonderful God.  We wish Debz and Graham a wonderful marriage.

Web site: for those of you who like to know exactly how far you have walked, Dave Cheffings sent me this site address:

                 www.magic.gov.uk/website/magic/
Type in the post-code (e.g. GL11 4JP), and the "topic" (e.g. Great Britain) and click OK . … the map appears !  There is a range of other navigation tools.

Now comes the cool bit - Click on "Measure Area" (the lasso and ruler symbol at the top) and ensure that you still have the dialogue box open (click on the windows toolbar to bring it to the fore if it has been covered up).

Next, click at the desired start point on the map - you'll see a red dot appear.  Then just keep clicking on each point along the route in order and each time you'll see a red dot appear (and sometimes disappear, but don't worry about that).  The total distance is recorded in the dialogue box.

If you make a mistake, there's a button in the dialogue box for deleting the previous point (which you can repeat if necessary).
Great eh!

Humorous Hints: What has happened to the club member’s sense of humour?  Surely there are some funny occasions that you would be prepared to share.  Do let the Editor have yours for the next edition of the Newsletter.

Prayer Patter

Having recently closely experienced another person’s move, I was freshly struck by some thoughts:

·        Lord, thank you for the time to keep and a time to throw away, the time to build and a time to tear down.  Thank you for the different perspectives you bring through different seasons.

·        Thank you for the clearing-out and re-sorting.  Thank you for the memories that surface when we turn up forgotten items.  Please help us to be open to what you want us to discard and to ‘let go’, to trust you to make way for new aspects.

·        Thank you Lord for the new points of contact that moving home, or office, or activity brings. Help us to welcome the new opportunities for different relationships, and to be open to the new contacts you bring us in this way.

·        Thank you for being available to help us with every tiny detail, in liaising with removers, contractors, helpers, and with seemingly endless boxes to have to unpack and contents put ‘somewhere’.  Please help us to find time with you during this time, to seek active connection with you and to trust you.

·        Lord, looking back we thank you for being there for us, and for the testimony that you were indeed faithful in covering everything we needed, even the aspects we were not thinking about.

·        Lord, we want to be ‘in your will’ in the new location.  We commit ourselves to you, in whatever role we will have there - for your service and your glory, that we may know you with us and in all our dealings and come to know you afresh.

·        If we are helping others move, please help us to be pleased for them, and to remain waiting on you for when our turn may come, however long or if at all.  Thank you for all your mercies and provision.

In Jesus Name.  Amen.   Judy Jones

‘The Hastings Line’

Daunted by the prospect of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk?

Or been there, done it?  Then why not try my new 77 mile Capital to Coast Walk?

Starting from Charing Cross, the official centre point of London, my Long Distance Path passes all stations on the railway line from Charing Cross to Hastings.  Its public inauguration will be by a series of linear station to station walks, of 7 to 10 miles on each Saturday and both Bank Holidays, from 19 May to 1 September 2007.

Each of these walks will include a picnic lunch stop and will be repeated on the following Saturday, enabling each full stage to be covered by two shorter walks over both dates, using an intermediate station if preferred.  We will meet at Charing Cross at 10.30am on Saturdays 19 and 26 May for the first stage to Hither Green station via the Thames Path and Southwark Park (lunch stop).

The route is easily accessible by public transport throughout, and is reasonably priced if using a railcard or Group Save rail tickets (pay for 2, 3 or 4 together).

I expect to complete a comprehensive DIY walk information pack with a separate route description including 1:20,000 mapping for each stage by Easter.  Copies will be available directly from me during these walks or at the CRC AGM event for £1.50 or £2.20 by post.

Members Meanders Part 2

Do you have “outdoors” skills or experience?  Do you care about young people?  Is this you?  Then how about getting involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme in your area?

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme has three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold and is a four-section programme for ages 14 - 25:

·        Service (helping people in the community)

·        Skills (covering almost any hobby, skill or interest)

·        Physical Recreation (sport, dance and fitness)

·        Expeditions (training for, planning and completing a journey on foot or horseback, by boat or cycle)

·        There’s also a fifth section (Residential) for Gold level

The Award is run by 400 Operating Authorities in the UK and is delivered via youth clubs, voluntary organisations, Open Award Centres, schools, colleges, young offender institutes and businesses.

I’ve been involved for over 15 years, mainly within the schools where I’ve taught, running a group, training participants for their expeditions, organising activities, supervising and assessing expeditions.  It’s always great working with young people who are positive and enthusiastic and who enjoy outdoor activities.  It’s certainly helped me maintain a positive view of young people.  I’ve also learnt a lot myself, and had some great fun, with opportunities to witness.  Another factor is that it’s been a way of “giving something back”.

Maybe you could help out at a local Award Group, be a group leader or teach expedition skills?  Or perhaps you've a passion for a certain sport or skill?  You don’t have to be a teacher or even work in a school, as there are groups in most areas of the country who would welcome help.

Local Leggings

Has your local group undertaken any interesting walks that you think other members might like to read about?

The first of these is given below from the East Midlands group:

At approximately 7.30pm, 14 intrepid CRCers mysteriously materialised at Foxton Locks from all points of the compass.  A daring soul in a dressing gown and a straw boater joined them!

Our group strode purposefully north for three miles along the Grand Union Canal to enjoy a barbecue skilfully prepared by our walk leader.

On the way to the designated field site we disturbed a group of fisherfolk who, banking on a quiet evening, were surprised to be surrounded by a talkative group of walkers!  On reaching the site Derek expertly prepared and cooked the food.  Needless to say 14 hungry walkers tucked in accordingly.

Following the meal, John Tomlinson's homily was much appreciated.  John read Mark 6v 45-51 - when Jesus compelled the disciples to go on board ship while He departed into the mountain to pray.  John applied this to the Christians’ responsible path through this world.  He reminded us that during life's experiences and troubles, Jesus is interceding for us at Gods' right hand (Hebrews 7 v 25).

After the barbecue we left the canal and walked three miles back to the cars via Saddington village, Saddington reservoir and Gumley arriving at 12.30am! Our thanks to Derek for a very interesting evening.
